What are Waistbeads?

Waistbeads are traditional and cultural West African strings of hand selected glass beads that adorn the waist, hip, and abdomen. Traditionally girls were provided with beads as they came of age to signify that they are entering womanhood. Once married it is then that the woman would cover her beads and have them adorn her body under her clothes.
